On the 3rd February 1945 Lancaster PD221, BQ-R of 550 Sqdn piloted by F/O R.G.Nye and his crew took off from North Killingholme at 16.31 Hrs for a raid on Bottrop  (Prosper Benzol Plant). On their return to base the Lancaster was intercepted by a German nightfighter (Hptm Heinz Rokker) and later crashed in the vicinity of the Dutch village Westerbeek in the province of Noord Brabant. The crew F/O R.G. Nye pilot/ WO W.J.Howson Wop/Ag/Sgt C.Stuart FE/Sgt J.Holding Nav/ Sgt J.F. Moyle Ba/ F/Sgt W.H.Cook RCAF Ag/ and F/Sgt L.C.Taerum RCAF Ag were killed and are buried at Westerbeek General Cemetery.
