F/O G A Morrison DSO and Crew
The F/O G A Morrison crew were posted to 550 Sqdn on squadron start-up from 100 Sqdn "C" Flight w.e.f. 25/11/43:
- F/O G A Morrison DSO (P)
- Sgt P W Wise (F/Eng)
- F/O F W Bennett (Nav)
- F/O R Warren (A/B)
- Sgt H C Gilbert (W/Op)
- Sgt J M Cantor (MU/AG)
- Sgt J McKenzie (R/AG)
On operations to Berlin on 30 January 1944 in DV305 the Morrison crew were attacked by a night-fighter. Both the MU/AG and R/AG received fatal injuries. Mis-interpreting orders from the pilot the A/B baled out over Germany and became a PoW. The pilot managed to regain control of the aircraft and nursed it back to England landing at Woodbridge on return. As a result of his actions pilot F/O Morrison was awarded the DSO.
Other information about the flight and the target available here (30 Jan 1944).
The entry on the 550 Squadron Roll of Honour is available here.
Below are a selection of photos of F/O Morrison and crew. Thanks to Bob Strangwayes for providing these photos (now in the squadron museum in North Killingholme).
